I forgot - I’ve been hearing a song coming out of people’s cars, and I’m pretty sure it’s FDT or FDT pt 2 by YG. There’s also Fuck ICE ICE Baby by No$hu

Rani Monson's avatar

A "heart / like" doesn't do your comment justice. Both added!

JustTanNotOrange's avatar

Thanks for doing this - great mix! Love hearing old favorites and music that’s new to me.

My suggestions:

All You Fascists, Billy Bragg/Wilco (Woody Guthrie lyrics)

City of Heroes, Billy Bragg

Do One, Frank Turner

The One Who Got Us Out or Little Dawn, Ted Leo and the Pharmacists

I Will Dare or Kids Don’t Follow, The Replacements

Love Is All Around cover by Husker Du

New Song, Howard Jones

Give It Up, Hothouse Flowers

Thousands Are Sailing, The Pogues

Not Ready To Make Nice, The Chicks

This Year, The Mountain Goats

I’d go with Know Your Rights by the Clash, These Days by R.E.M. (bc World Leader Pretend is about an individual’s internal struggles), and Rock and Roll Is Alive! (And It Lives in Minneapolis) by Prince (just bc it’s so positive).

Bc of Spotify’s ICE recruitment ads, I switched to Qobuz - I recommend it! I’ll be listening to your playlist there. Thanks again! 💙

Justin Paden's avatar

Are you able to listen to a Spotify playlist on Qobuz?

JustTanNotOrange's avatar

You can transfer your playlists. Qobuz doesn’t have all the music Spotify has, though - a few songs on this playlist aren’t available, though they say they’re always adding music to their library.

I know Google is also not great, but songs not on Qobuz should be on YouTube, right? They seem like the lesser of two evils (Spotify vs Google) for now. I know Bandcamp is good for artists and I’d like to use it more. Boycotting the oligarchs makes life less convenient, often more expensive, and feels impossible to do entirely. Just trying to do what I can, imperfectly

Rani Monson's avatar

@tc999 can you share how you’re accessing the Spotify playlist on Qobuz? I haven’t tried it but now I want to as well

Rani Monson's avatar

Yes!! You brought The Replacements & recommended replacements. My hero.

So I'm not a Spotify person. I use Qobuz & Roon. I appreciate you calling out the ICE adds on Spotify...I started there figuring it was "accessible" - but perhaps too much so...

Added:

- All You Fascists, Billy Bragg/Wilco (Woody Guthrie lyrics) ((b/c I skipped City of Heroes to keep to 1))

-- Do One, Frank Turner -- I didn't know this songs. Right away, the beginning gave me chills.

-- The One Who Got Us Out -- Ted Leo and the Pharmacists

-- Kids Don’t Follow, The Replacements: surreal how perfect. And Paul Westerberg's voice still gets me.

-- Love Is All Around cover by Husker Du - Bob Mould melts me.

-- New Song, Howard Jones: put a smile on my face. Good call.

-- Give It Up, Hothouse Flowers & Thousands Are Sailing, The Pogues (way to bring the Irish!)

-- Not Ready To Make Nice, The Chicks - they were most definitely missing from this list.

-- This Year, The Mountain Goats: pushed way to the top; I need to get to know this band better & I hope to see them live.

Replacements based on your recommendations:

The Clash: replaced Rock the Casbah with Know Your Rights.

YES!

R.E.M. -- replaced World Leader Pretend with These Days.

World Leader always hurts my heart, but you're right on the switch. And I just am not feeling Orange Crush for this.

Prince: replaced America with Rock and Roll Is Alive! (And It Lives in Minneapolis)

Such a perfect suggestion. I saw him live twice. He was so wow. Imagine if he was still with us...

Create Your Own Breaks's avatar

I heard this last night and cried.

When it was released, it was nothing more than a good song with a driving beat offering a sci-fi view into a world centuries away. Last night I was jolted by how real it taps into the fear and anxiety we face based on what is now unfolding.

This line:

"Teach the children quietly / For someday sons and daughters / Will rise up and fight while we stood still."

The song is "Silent Running" by Mike + The Mechanics

Rani Monson's avatar

Oh you're right! I just listened. And added to the playlist. Thank you! Same experience as you...totally missed it before. It also amazes me how songs that "feel" upbeat can just slay me

Justin Paden's avatar

If you use Discord, but aren't already in God's server, here's a link...

https://discord.gg/UV73SacEzW

You should post the playlist there and ask for suggestions.

Rani Monson's avatar

You're welcome to share there / post & point people to the conversation!

Agreed. Another valuable musical resource for those nostalgic of the top 40 of the past is Professor of Rock on YouTube. Adam Reader does all sorts of episodes origins of songs, how groups got together, the way artists or groups developed over time, songs that got banned or have meanings other than what we thought they do, interviews with artists or groups, and much more.

Rani Monson's avatar

Thank you! Looking at the You Tube channel & website...nice. And is just me or is that a dream job?!

Bill Williamson's avatar

I'd call it a dream job. Not everyone would say that though.

Jan's avatar

Woody Guthrie; The Weavers; Peter Paul & Mary inspired everyone else❣️ Here's Noah Paul Stookey to haunt you with El Salvador.https://youtu.be/gOAqPqt6nqU?si=5RCA4a2rD8Xbw5Sa

Rani Monson's avatar

Hi Jan --

Thanks for jumping in & playing! You're so right: we need on a nod to those who got us here. I appreciate your recommendations.

I've added

- The Weavers: Had trouble picking one here. 'Goodnight Irene' was originally done by Woody. I started reading all their history and what happened during the Red Scare. If feels so far away, yet so close.

Went with 'Which Side Are You On' -- feels appropriate

- Peter Paul & Mary - El Salvador (the song a history lesson itself!)

- Woody Guthrie - This Land is Your Land

thank you!

Jan's avatar

Jumping to now, Jesse Welles channels Woody Guthrie but I can't pick just one.https://youtube.com/@hellswelles?si=rZoJ7L-xoQtFm87X

Rani Monson's avatar

I totally relate!

Justin Paden's avatar

I'm guessing that the song Dear Mr. President was written during the Bush years, considering the lyrics?

Rani Monson's avatar

Yes! It was an open letter to him. It still feels relevant and is so haunting. I think it still works - do you agree / disagree? I'm totally open to removing some. The list is growing!

Justin Paden's avatar

If you want my input, I say don't remove a thing. You are absolutely correct. Unfortunately, I'm pretty sure that all anti Bush music is still relevant today.

Justin Paden's avatar

I just thought of a couple more...

Draft Dodgers by Escape From The Zoo

Eat The One Percent by Rehasher

Rani Monson's avatar

good - love the variety / added both. Are you listening?! It's an experience

Justin Paden's avatar

I'm about to now

Bill Williamson's avatar

Even though I'm not a Green Day fan I'd add American Idiot which they've changed to MAGA Idiot when they perform it live. It couldn't hurt to add Children of The Grave by Black Sabbath or their song War Pigs. Ozzy's Crazy Train would for as well. I asked about Dear Mr. President because 4 Nonblondes has a song with the same name. Ice T has a great one: Escape From The Killing Fields. None of my suggestions are necessarily anti ICE per se, but they fit the vibe of you know what I mean. There's Bring The Noise by Public Enemy and Anthrax, Free Your Mind by En Vogue, Right Here, Right Now by Jesus Jones, Express Yourself by Madonna, Both This Way by Lady Gaga, My Oh My by Slade, Raising Hell by Run DMC, Only a Heartbeat Away by T' Pau, Heroes by David Bowie. I've included some "positive" songs because we need a balance if we're going to do this right - that's just my opinion of course.

Rani Monson's avatar

Bill - thank you for your thoughtful reply & recommendations. You're giving me homework! And absolutely agree - this needs balance and positive songs that give us hope.

Added to the playlist:

- Dear Mr. President - good callout. They are each distinct songs. I've also added the Nonblondes version.

- Ice T -- yes!!

- Free Your Mind by En Vogue

- Right Here, Right Now by Jesus Jones - wow! Takes me back. Saw them live.

- Express Yourself by Madonna -- interesting! Wouldn't have thought of this.

- Born This Way by Lady Gaga -- she was so missing from this list!

- My Oh My by Slade -- wow. I do not know this song!

- Raising Hell by Run DMC -- duh!

- T' Pau -- I'm guessing Heart and Soul? Added. I know this song but not the singer's name.

- Heroes by David Bowie -- of course. So good

Brings playlist to 72! Nice work

Rani Monson's avatar

User error: (I added the entire Lady Gaga album...and even though she deserves it, rules are rules!) updated count = 60

Rani Monson's avatar

BUT: ICE has "rules" - so does this Playlist! Each band only gets 1 song. See my questions below (feedback needed) on ones already on here.

Feedback needed:

- Green Day: I've got 21 Guns - do you propose replacing it with American Idiot, given their current live take (which I love!)

- Black Sabbath - Children... I've already got an Ozzy solo on here. Do we do both? (both songs are all Ozzy)

Bill Williamson's avatar

First, is the song by the Indigo Girls originally by 4 Nonblondes? If so, that's a great song. Next, some of the songs on my list are yours:

For What It's Worth(Buffalo Springfield)

Imagine (John Lennon)

God Save the Queen (The Sex Pistols)

Revolution (The Beatles)

Rock The Casbah (The Clash)

Ohio (Crosby, Stills, Nash, and Young)

Sunday Bloody Sunday (U2)

F*** The Police (N.W.A.)

The Revolution Will Not be Televised (Gil Scott-Heron)

A Change is Gonna Come (Sam Cooke)

Get Up, Stand Up (Bob Marley)

What's Going On (Marvin Gaye)

Killing in the Name (Rage Against The Machine)

Fight The Power (Public Enemy)

Strange Fruit (Billie Holiday)

The Edge of a Revolution (Nickelback)

Riot (Dead Kennedy's)

Cop Killer (Body Count)

Motor City is Burning (MC5)

There's a Riot Goin' On (Sly and The Family Stone)

Babylon's Burning (The Ruts)

Electric Avenue (Eddy Grant)

Rani Monson's avatar

added - w/ my comments:

Added:

God Save the Queen (The Sex Pistols) - thought about / didn't so glad you're suggesting.

Revolution (The Beatles) - of course!

Rock The Casbah (The Clash) - nice. I'm doing the remastered version on some of these but it's giving me pause...

Ohio (Crosby, Stills, Nash, and Young) -- this one too. I was like...added. B/c I have a Neil Young song...but going with it.

Sunday Bloody Sunday (U2) - of course

F*** The Police (N.W.A.) - perfect

The Revolution Will Not be Televised (Gil Scott-Heron) - love; pushed it way up on the list

A Change is Gonna Come (Sam Cooke) - perfect ending song

Get Up, Stand Up (Bob Marley) - yup

Fight The Power (Public Enemy)

Strange Fruit (Billie Holiday) - excellent

The Edge of a Revolution (Nickelback) - interesting

Riot (Dead Kennedy's) - yas

Cop Killer (Body Count) - wouldn't have come up with this

Motor City is Burning (MC5) - yup

Babylon's Burning (The Ruts) - great

Electric Avenue (Eddy Grant) - forgot about this one!

Rani Monson's avatar

Already on the list:

- For What It's Worth(Buffalo Springfield)

- What's Going On (Marvin Gaye)

- Killing in the Name (Rage Against The Machine)

Already represented - should it change?:

- Imagine (John Lennon)- I've got Give Peace a Chance

Bill Williamson's avatar

Give Peace a Chance is a great choice as well. I knew there were a few overlaps. Ice T actually wrote Cop Killer before the Rodney King beating and as a warning that that was the way people were going to react. It wasn't intended as a call to violence.

Rani Monson's avatar

Wow - I didn't know that, Bill. It seems a very important history book could / should be written that puts together why and how these songs came to be.

Rani Monson's avatar

Justin: wow - thank you for opening my ears!

Added:

- The Muslims - fabulous! Haven't heard them. This would be a fun show to go to. You had > 1 on here. Take a look at which I picked.

- Propagandhi - so perfect; > 1 so I picked 1 I liked most (hard to pick!)

- Bad Religion - huh? Definitely wouldn't include them in my definition of punk. And a nod to alternative facts?! Ha!

- PWRUP - so, so true.

- Dropkick Murphys -- yes!

- Have No Heroes - nice twist

- Jesse Welles -- YES! I pushed this way up

count = 85 songs!

Justin Paden's avatar

I'm happy to say that I was wrong about the Propagandhi song that you chose. They're both great!

Justin Paden's avatar

Oh, and Have No Heroes is a band that I was recently introduced to. They are now one of my favorites.

Rani Monson's avatar

From Latvia? Listening...I love their name. I'd totally wear it on a t-shirt.

And...The Dropkick Murphy's is currently touring.

Justin Paden's avatar

Nice! I'm glad you liked it. Bad Religion has been a big part of the punk scene since the 80s. Their newer stuff definitely isn't as hard as their older stuff, but they were still kicking ass in the early 2000s. The Empire Strikes First is one of my favorite BR albums! As far as the Propagandhi and Muslims songs go, I haven't seen what you picked yet, but you can't go wrong with either. I assume that the Propagandhi song you picked was At Peace. It slaps so hard! The lyrics, the guitar, and the way Chris holds that note at the end... chef's kiss!!!!

I am absolutely loving this playlist!!! Been singing along on the job site to the ones I know, and I'm so glad to have found new music. The looks I got when Fuck Tha Police came on were great! 😆

Rani Monson's avatar

🤣🤯you've totally made my day!

Justin Paden's avatar

And you've made mine, thanks to this playlist. Also, I did not sing every word. I'm a white guy, so there's certain parts where I went quiet. 😆

Rani Monson's avatar

Justin! You’re my hero. Thanks for all these recommendations. Fantastic. And so many songs for me to listen to tomorrow. Huge thanks for your thoughtfulness.

My “anti ICE” categorization is fuzzy: I included songs that speak to times the government has messed up, doing its people wrong. I also included the other end of the spectrum, on how different things could be.

Truth: You nailed it - punk is definitely a weak area for me (you wouldn’t want me on your team for that category); I wanted to include Beastie Boys ‘In a world gone mad’ but it’s not on Spotify

Justin Paden's avatar

Also, I can't believe they don't have that song.

Justin Paden's avatar

No worries. I'm a big punk fan. I got your back. There might be a few that you find too heavy, but who knows. I saw some metal in there.

Also, one of the songs I posted was Who'll Stand With Us by The Dropkick Murphys. If you get a chance, check out the video for it on YouTube. Just make sure you have some tissues handy.

Rani Monson's avatar

Justin: thank you for telling me to go watch this version of the video. Just did -- took the breath out of my lungs

Justin Paden's avatar

Yeah. Same here. ❤️

Justin Paden's avatar

I just found out that NOFX released a new song called Minnesota Nazis.

Rani Monson's avatar

PERFECT! Added

Rani Monson's avatar

Funny / sad: I don’t have Spotify on this device. I’m more of a Roon gal. Will listen / add Thursday & expect there will be some new bands / shows for me to go see!

Create Your Own Breaks's avatar

It's not 'history repeats itself' but "They Don't Really Care About Us" (Michael Jackson) pretty much sums up this administration.

Rani Monson's avatar

Thanks Melanie -- great call & suggestion! MJ's 'They Don't Really Care About Us' has been added to Anti ICE Anthems playlist.
